Muncher Cruncher Healthy Holiday Gift Guide 2016

I’ve had a lot of requests for some healthy holiday gift ideas for both your loved ones AND you! If you are trying to stick to a healthy lifestyle, the holidays are a GREAT time to gear up with everything you need to start the continue your journey!

I have SO many favorites I could list here…It’s hard to even know where to begin. The BEST Workout Leggings & Where To Find Them

There are few things worse than clothing malfunctions when you are working out. It takes away from the ability to work hard. If you’re too busy worrying about if your pants are see through, or how you are going to keep them up with one hand whist trying to squat…the workout is going to start to suffer. SO, what’s a hard working girl to do? Well, start by ditching the crappy leggings, & find something that works for you! Here are some of my favorite suggestions, & why I love them…The list goes from left to right in this photo, and I’ve linked the details for ya! 

  • Lululemon speed tights Price point: $108 – I love these because they fit like a dream. Lulu’s prices are always on the higher end, BUT it’s with good reason. Their quality is awesome. They have a 5 year warranty, & awesome customer service. These have side pockets if you like to keep your phone on you while you are running/lifting/hiking. They change up the prints all the time, and usually have some fun patterns to choose from.
  • Athleta Electra Sonar 7/8 Tight Price point: $89 – My sister gave me these darling tights for my B-day & I LOVE them. They rise a little higher in the waist, and they STAY IN PLACE. This print isn’t available anymore, but I linked the closest possible option. While Athleta’s prices are also a little higher, their quality is great. Their fabric washes well, & is flattering.
  • Old Navy Go Dry High Rise Compression Tights Price Point:$15-30 These are an awesome option for a much lower price. The quality isn’t as high with these leggings as far as wash & wear over time. However, I am super impressed with them. You can’t beat the price, & I LOVE the way they fit. The high rise waistline is awesome. I also have THESE mid rise compression leggings, & I LOVE them.
  • Zella Live in Leggings Price Point: $52 These leggings are my JAM. I actually don’t wear them to workout in all the time. I’ll wear them to hike in occasionally. But, the reason for that is because I like to wear them every other second of the day. These are my go-to black, standard, wear every second of the day, awesome quality leggings. They are from Nordstrom. I can’t say enough good things about them. They wash well. They wear well. They are the best amount of thickness. They are flattering. They are THE best. If you don’t have them. You need them. They always go on sale during the anniversary sale, FYI!
  • Nike Power Epic Lux Price Point: $108 full price (This is full price on, BUT they go on sale!) These tights are AWESOME. They are a good amount of thickness, and I LOVE the waistband on these pants. They come in high rise as well. Nike also has another similar pant that has an elastic waistband that I DO NOT like. I feel like it cuts you off, right where you don’t want it…or me at least. These tights stay in place, and if you check a Nike outlet, or any other sporting goods store that carries Nike products, you will likely find them on sale!
  • GapFit Blackout Technology gFast Space Dye high rise leggings Price Point:$30-65 I LOVE these leggings so much. Apparently Oprah does too. Turns out they were on her favorite things list. They are so comfortable. The quality is great. The high rise waist fits comfortably, and if you can’t get them on sale…you should wait for a hot second. Gap almost always is offering some sort of 30-40% off deal, which makes them a steal. They are thick enough to where they aren’t see through, but not so thick that they are suffocating. Plus the pattern is so unique. I Love them!
  • Lululemon All The Right Places Tights Price Point: $128 Another pricer pant, BUT they are named adequately. They are flattering on EVERYONE. Not only that, they are specifically lined and vented for those who workout. What does that mean? Well, the seat of the pant is lined with a thicker material so you won’t be seeing through them when you are squatting/burpeeing/bending…etc. Other parts are vented to keep you cooler while sweating. GENIUS. If you are wanting to invest in a GOOD, high quality pair to wear all the time. These are your guys right here. They also have side pockets…which obviously…we all love.
  • Lululemon High Rise Wunder Under Crop Full on Luon 21″ Price Point: $88 – I realize the length of these might be different on everyone, but I love the length! They are longer than a capri, but not all the way down to the ankle. The high rise is fantastic, & they are super flattering. Lulu frequently comes out with a variety of colors & prints in these which a lot of time will eventually go on sale if you can catch your size. Just check the “we made too much,” section. They also make these in a full pant, which is awesome.
  • Athleta Chaturunga Tight Price Point: $29-89 These are one of Athleta’s basic tights. They come in high rise, mid rise, capris, full tights, w/pockets…and in a ton of different prints. They are fantastic. I LOVE the striped capris. They are darling on every body type. They are high quality, they wash well, & they stay in place. All things that matter big time to me!

There are SO many different types of tights out there I know it can be a little overwhelming, trying to find something that works for your body type, but hopefully this can point you in the right direction!

Muncher Cruncher Fitness Favorite Must Haves

It’s Christmas shopping time…which it always SO fun, but can also be a bit stressful. Whether you are looking for things for the people you love, or to put on your own list…here is a list of some of my fitness favorites.

  1. Socks. As you know I’m a HUGE fan of socks these days. There are so many different fun  patterns/styles that can keep your feet warm while you are just kicking around or spice up your workout outfit a bit.   3. Lulu Lemon Speed Shorts. I LOVE these shorts. The Speed Short 4-way stretch is my favorite. However, they have a ton of different varieties if you don’t love the way those ones fit on you. thumb_IMG_3815_1024
  4. G fast Leggings from Gap Fit.  These are so comfortable. I love the 23″ style because they are the perfect length. I have them in both black & gray & I wear them ALL the time!

  7. Nike Internationalists. I don’t wear these to work out in, but they are my absolute favorite kick around shoes. I have worn them to Disneyland, on trips where i’m walking all day, and just for everyday life. They are seriously so comfortable, and so cute. They are also great for jumping in front of unicorns.   8. Joggers. I wear joggers like 10 times per week. They are the perfect mix between comfortable, stylish, & not completely scroungy…or at least that is what I tell myself. Some of my favorites? HERE. HERE. and HERE.
  9. Healthy Snacks: Questbars/Larabars/G2G Bars/Skinny Pop/Nearly Naked Popcornopolis/Boom Chicka Pop/Krave Jerky/nuts/gum/etc.
  10. Patagonia Nano Puff Hooded Jacket. I LOVE this coat. It’s the perfect weight to throw on as a layer because it is so lightweight, but it’s super warm. I wear it ALL. THE. TIME.
  11. Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 32 – These shoes have become some of my favorites. They are so comfy, and so cute. They have some new floral styles that are absolutely to die for. You can find them HEREmunchercrunchergiftlist_pegasus
  12. Giftcards to your favorite healthy restaurant. You just can’t go wrong with gift cards. You can’t. I love to eat. I love to eat out. I especially love to eat out when it’s free. I think everyone feels pretty much the same on that. thumb_IMG_5891_1024 
  13. Zella Live In Leggings. These basic black leggings are perfection. I wear them all the time. If you don’t have some. Get some. You will not regret it.
  14. Subscriptions to Spotify/Netflix/Itunes. It is always easier to work out when you have great music, or some shows to watch. Subscriptions to make this possible make for an awesome gift.
  15. Gap Fit Breathe Heathered Hoodie.  The material on these hoodies is so soft. They are perfect to throw on to run to the gym, or just to be comfortable. They also have some that don’t have the hood that are equally as awesome.
  16. Muscle Tanks. I have been loving working out in muscle tanks these days. Some of my favorites are HERE and HEREmunchercrunchergift_tank
  17. Fitness Equipment: Kettlebell, hand weights, jump rope, Bosu Ball Medicine ball. This is an endless category really. I feel like there are always a million things I want. The above mentioned items are some great basic pieces to enable some great at home workouts. thumb_IMG_9001_1024
  18. Gym Membership/personal training sessions/a session of Fit Camp 🙂 …  This is a simple way to give the gift of health!
  19. Headphones. I love THESE Skull Candy headphones and THESE Dre Beats.
  20. Backpack or Gym Bag. I think a gym bag is an AWESOME gift because it is something that people use all the time , but don’t necessarily think to buy one for themselves. Get the Summer Body You Meant to Get in April…of 2014…

I know that so many people have goals for their, “summer bodies.” It always makes me laugh a little because, while I realize you want to look awesome in your swimsuit, I always wonder why you don’t want to look and feel great all year round. I don’t know about you, but I find it a LOT harder to keep up the motivation in October-December when it’s cold & dark, & pumpkin flavored everything sugary seems to be raining from the sky. Maybe the goal shouldn’t just be to look great for 3 months out of the year, but to get that Christmas Body, one that can translate easily into your Valentines Body, your St. Patricks Day Body, that will roll nicely into your Easter Body…and will more than likely have you feeling fantastic when your 4th of July Body is on display. 😉 iloveit5

I guess what I’m saying is maybe it’s a better goal to strive to have a healthy attitude & healthy habits year round, that will translate nicely into helping you to look AND FEEL the way you want ALL YEAR ROUND. The following are some tips that will help to make this possible, because it is!

1. Make some LASTING dietary changes. Instead of going as strict as can be for 21 days…or 30 days…or whatever amount of days seems to be the magic number of the diet of the moment, make some changes in your life that will be lasting. For example: Decide to make a meal plan for the week, and structure your meals around healthy options, do some meal prep to make those meals happen. Choose to quick buying the vast amounts of processed foods/treats that always sounds like a good idea at the time. Include more fresh produce in your diet. Cut out the sugar.

2. Which brings me to #2….cut out the sugar. If there is ONE thing that I preach/and will continue to preach until i’m blue in the face, it’s to CUT OUT THE SUGAR. Excess sugar usually means excess caloric intake, which means excess fat storage, and more than likely means excess body weight. If you cut your sugar intake down, you will be doing yourself a BIG favor.

3. Increase your water intake. If you are drinking full-sugar drinks, stop. Drinking your calories is a terrible idea because it will not fill you up in any way, and it will increase your sugar intake a GREAT deal. Replace that sugary stuff with water. There are so many benefits of drinking water, one of which is assistance in weight loss. Try to drink 100 oz per day. I dare you.

4. Make exercise a regular habit, no questions asked. I know it’s not always fun, and I’m sure there are a long long list of reasons why you’d rather not…but the benefits that you’ll receive from a regular exercise routine are exponential. There are SO many different things you can do to be active. Find one that works for you. Find something that you will stick to. Find something that you can make a long lasting habit, not that you will be able to “handle” for two weeks.

5. Decide to make your LIFE healthier. Quite often when people are only trying to achieve a certain “look” it’s very short lived. It is far more likely that you’ll be able to create a routine you will stick to if you seek to really change your habits.

6. Stop lying to yourself. This might be the most important thing, harsh as it may seam. Stop sneaking bites, eating crappy food, having too many desserts, giving %50 to your workouts, skipping your workouts altogether….and pretending like it’s not going to effect you. I HATE to break it to you, but you can’t think yourself into a different way of life….without putting in the effort. Actually I don’t hate to break it to you. YOU CANNOT THINK YOURSELF INTO A DIFFERENT WAY OF LIFE WITHOUT PUTTING IN THE EFFORT!! I wish I could scream that from the roof tops. I work with a lot of people that want results without putting in the CORRECT amount of work/effort. It is just not going to happen. Period. The end. Stop skipping from one fad diet to the next, wanting an easy out. If it sounds too easy/too good to be true/too effortless…IT IS. If it was SOOOOO easy, do you think we would have such an unreal problem with obesity? Just some food for thought.


How to Travel & Keep Up Your Healthy Habits

I love to travel. I love weekend getaways. I love day trips. I love adventures just about anywhere, near or far. Most people think of vacations, and they tend to think of vacationing from all responsibility, including any healthy habits they may have. While I do think that there is a time and a place for indulgence, I also think that making good health a part of your lifestyle wherever you are will make you happier (and healthier) in the long run. Don’t get me wrong, vacations are meant to be enjoyed. You should try wonderful food, and indulge every now and then, but if you can keep to some healthy habits along the way you may find that you enjoy those wonderful foods and indulgences far more!

1. BYOB. Bring your own breakfast. Breakfast is usually the hardest meal on vacation because going out to breakfast more than likely means pastries, pancakes, heavy syrup, cheesy eggs, and donuts. It is easy to bring along some protein bars, fresh fruit, oatmeal packets, almonds, nut butter, jerky, and other packable items that you can eat for breakfast that will start your day on a better note than an excessive blood sugar high.

2. Find something active to do everyday. It is amazing what you can do with your surroundings. Go out for a morning walk and explore wherever you may be. Utilize the hotel gym. Do a simple and quick circuit in your hotel room. Go for a run. Plan some activities in your day that require some walking so you are sure to get some exercise in. vacationThere are a lot of cities that offer awesome bike tours, or that have fun parks and gardens to explore. Walking around town is great exercise!

3. Don’t be afraid to make use of your surroundings. alexandersbeachThere are park benches, hills, playgrounds, and all sorts of sidewalks everywhere you go that you can make use of. It is a matter of going and doing!

4. Choose healthy eats. I am one hundred percent convinced that you can eat healthy just about anywhere. It is jus a matter of being willing to look for healthy options. Bring snacks with you if you are worried that there aren’t going to be options that you will eat. It is better to be prepared than to find yourself starving, leaving you likely to eat whatever you  can get your hands on. It is also a good idea to bring your own healthy snacks to have on hand for in-between times! Protein bars, nuts, popcorn, jerky, string cheese, dried fruit, fresh fruit, baby carrots, fresh veggies…etc. Even if you may not be able to exercise like you would normally, you can still make good eating decisions.

5. Make your healthy lifestyle the norm. If you do your best to stick to your normal healthy habits while you are away from home, it won’t be a big effort to get back into your routine when you get home. Remember that everyday you choose to eat what you eat, to exercise or not, to make healthy decisions vs. unhealthy ones…so decide to be healthy. Make it who you are. I promise you will benefit from it.

6. Enjoy some R&R. As much as exercise and being active is healthy, relaxation is healthy too. It may be good for you to rest a bit if need be. Take advantage of getting some good sleep, resting up, and relaxing on your vacations too. It’s all about a healthy balance!

Two Thumbs Up For Memorial Day

This past weekend has been pretty amazing…I went with some of my fabulous friends to St. George for a weekend away. We hiked. We ate. We laughed until we cried. IMG_7499We went on a beautiful hike to Kanarville Falls, which was amazing.  IMG_7512I love that my friends are willing to get out and be active with me! IMG_7539There isn’t much better than enjoying the beautiful outdoors, especially when it is with the people you love!IMG_7590If you haven’t done this hike before, I highly recommend it!! The 5 Step Holiday Cleanup

After the holidays are over, it is quite common to feel ready for a fresh start. People are usually looking to get back on track, and into a better routine…one that isn’t laced with plates of cookies, caramel popcorn, and endless sugary sweets. icecreamI am a believer in moderation. However, it seems like during the holidays people tend to moderate the good foods they are eating…while binging on the less healthy options. SO. Let’s get back into it!

STEP #1: Get rid of the junk. Chances are, if it is still in front of you, you will probably eat it. So, get rid of it. Freeze it, box it, give it away, chuck it, feed it to the dog…do whatever you need to do to make your slate clean.

STEP #2: Restock. Once you have eliminated all of the unhealthy options from your kitchen, fridge, and pantry, you will have plenty of room to fill your shelves with fresh produce, lean proteins, and other good healthy options. It may not be a bad idea to map out your meals for the upcoming span of time to give yourself a plan to stick to. Planning ahead is ALWAYS beneficial to success.

STEP #3: Get your water in. Cleanse all of the garbage out of your system. Drink 100 oz of water per day.

STEP #4: Get moving. Get back into workout mode. You will feel SO much better when you do. Make it a goal to do something active every day. If you still have family and friends in town, include them in it. Go hiking, go for walks, go snowshoeing, go to the skating rink…just get moving. If you can get back into your real workouts, even better, but do what you can!

STEP #5: Keep it clean, lean, and green. Remember my mantra for December? Well, it’s back. The best way to get yourself back on track is to get rid of the sugar. Focus your meals around LOTS of healthy greens and lean proteins. That, coupled with a lot of water will have your back on track in no time!

My favorite Christmas movie: Home Alone, although you can get me to join you on whatever Hallmark/ABC Family/Lifetime Christmas movie you’ve got on at any moment.

My favorite Christmas tradition: I love watching Christmas movies, and baking holiday goodies.

My favorite gift as a child: My American Girl Doll, Molly.

My favorite Christmas memory: The time I knew I was getting a dollhouse for Christmas/ I was probably 12. and my mom overheard me feeling extremely confident about the exact dollhouse I thought I was getting. My family then spent extensive amounts of time creating a dollhouse from cardboard and placing it beneath a sheet, so that when I ran down the stairs in the morning and threw the sheet off, the joke was on me. They proceeded to go the rest of the morning without telling me that my actual dollhouse was in the garage. Ask me the details of this occasion in person sometime. It’s a pretty good story.

Favorite holiday food: Cinnamon Almonds

What I gave for Christmas: This year I gave my clients Skinny Pop and my Zucchini Cookies, two of my favorite healthy snacks!

What I hope Santa Brings me: Some Sorel boots & new workout clothes.

Favorite Christmas Song: O Holy Night

My wrapping of choice: Brown paper packages tied up with string. Really though. I wrapped all my gifts with brown wrapping paper and bakers twine. Simple and darling.

Healthily Surviving Your Holiday Activities

There are so many different fun holiday traditions that can throw a wrench in one’s healthy routines. For example…one thing my family does during the holidays is go to the movies. We do it all the time actually, but it is definitely more frequent during the holiday season. I LOVE this tradition of ours. However, I am also fully aware of one of my biggest weaknesses when I walk into the theater. The smell of that movie theater popcorn gets me. Oh man, I love it. Yep, I am the person who sneaks my own SkinnyPop into the theater. This way my hand doesn’t get away from me…cleaning out the bottom of the popcorn bag like I know I could easily do. Going prepared helps me to stay on track without feeling deprived. There are a lot of ways to be able to be a part of holiday traditions without feeling deprived. Here are some more tips…

  • Make sure you eat before you do your holiday shopping, and stow some healthy snacks in your purse if need be. Shopping tends to take longer than we think it will, and we all get hungry. During these times we go for whatever is quick and convenient, which usually isn’t all that healthy. If you are prepared, you won’t find yourself chowing on unhealthy quick options.
  • Contribute to the holiday party spread. When you know family dinners and holiday get togethers are going to be offering a spread of unhealthy options, offer to bring something. Bring a veggie tray and hummus, a big healthy salad, sliced apples and fruit dip, or a healthy dessert. I love to bring these zucchini cookies. People don’t usually even realize they are eating something healthy with these guys. 😉 You can save a few of these to leave out for Santa. (Help save him a few calories!)
  • Check your menu options. If you are going out to eat, which is something my family and friends do a lot of during the holidays, give the menu a look online to check what they have to order. Choose a healthy option before you go, so you won’t even have to think twice about it.
  • Include some physical activity in your holiday outings. Go ice skating, skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, take a walk to see the neighborhood lights, walk around to go caroling, or go for a hike.
  • Think before you grab. While there may be Christmas treats everywhere…that doesn’t mean they are all good. Just because your neighbor leaves you a plate of cookies on your porch doesn’t mean you have to eat them. Take the kind gesture, appreciate it, and throw them away. OK, maybe that is harsh, but eating a whole plate of cookies that are sub-par = not worth it. If they are AWESOME, then keep the good stuff. Freeze them for later. Share them. Just be wise with your choices. You’ll be glad, post-holidays. I promise.

Enjoy your holiday season. It really is the best time of the year! Just do it in a way that will have you feeling healthy and happy! After all, you want to be able to enjoy as many holiday seasons as possible. Right? 😉
